THE GEORGIA URBAN FOREST COUNCIL EXCELLENCE IN URBAN FORESTRY AWARDS 2007
The Georgia Urban Forest Council, a state-wide nonprofit organization with the mission of sustaining Georgia’s green legacy by helping communities grow healthy trees, awarded their Excellence in Urban Forestry Awards on November 1, 2007 at the Rome Forum. GUFC’s annual Excellence in Urban Forestry Awards are presented to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding service toward the preservation and enhancement of our urban forests.
The GUFC Excellence in Urban Forestry Award Receipients for 2007 included:
Outstanding Business Grand Award: Georgia Transmission Corporation for the Milton Substation
Outstanding Community Grand Award: City of Savannah for its Urban Forestry Program
Outstanding Individual Achievement Grand Award: Dale Higdon, Georgia Forestry Commission
Outstanding Marketing Grand Award: City of Alpharetta Arbor Day Celebration
Outstanding Education Grand Award: Gary Wilkens and the Central Gwinnett Black Knight Memory Garden
Outstanding Education Merit Award: Clayton County Public School for its Outdoor Classroom Initiative at Callaway, Hawthorne & River’s Edge Elementary Schools
Outstanding Civic Organization Grand Award: Trenton Tree Board for its Trenton Tree Board Honorariums
Outstanding Civic Organization Merit Award: Park Pride for its Visioning Master Plan for Beecher Hampton Nature Preserve
Outstanding Greenspace Plan Grand Award: City of Helen Tree Restoration
Outstanding Greenspace Plan Merit Award: Cobb Trees/Keep Cobb Beautiful for the Hopkins Road Greenspace Recovery
Outstanding New Initiative: The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center
2007 President’s Award: Susan Reisch, Georgia Forestry Commission
Grand Award recipients were presented with a framed, limited-edition print of Rome’s September Elm Tree, located in historic Myrtle Hill Cemetery, commissioned exclusively for this year’s event by artist Barry Nehr.
The Georgia Urban Forest Council was founded in 1988 by a group of individuals who recognized the need for an organization to address urban forestry issues in Georgia. Today, the Council is an active group offering educational programs and resources and supported by a growing and diverse membership.
