The Trees of Stonewall Confederate Cemetery
|
Inside the iron fence of Stonewall Cemetery there are 39 trees. Twenty-five are red cedars averaging 17 to 18 inches dbh. In addition, there are 10 oaks, 3 magnolias and 1 hickory. The exact planting date is unknown, but it is estimated the trees were planted shortly after the cemetery was established in 1867. The cemetery is the resting place of 504 soldiers who perished during the Civil War.
The marker at the cemetery reads: "Stonewall Cemetery is located on part of a plot given as a burial site by Gen. Lewis Lawrence Griffin when he founded Griffin in 1840. Several hundred Confederate and one union soldier, casualties of the Battles of Atlanta and Jonesboro, from the hospital at the Old Synodical College and Battlefields, are buried here. The principal monument, the first to Confederate dead, was erected by the Ladies Memorial Association of Griffin in 1869." The Trees of Stonewall Confederate Cemetery will join the trees listed above on the
Landmark and Historic Tree Register.
